ABC Picks Up Masters of Science Fiction Series

Many months ago I reported that the people behind Show Time’s Masters of Horror anthology series were working on a similar show with a science fiction theme. Variety is now reporting that that show, which goes by the title Masters of Science Fiction has been picked up by no less than ABC.

ABC has ordered four episodes of Masters of Science Fiction, but IDT and Industry Entertainment plan to produce at least six episodes and possibly a full 13. Writer Michael Tolkin has already been brought on board to adapt and direct one episode for the series.

The producers are in talks to produce episodes based on stories by science fiction greats like Harlan Ellison, Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury. Currently they plan to start production on Masters of Science Fiction this May with the aim of having the series available for a summer launch on ABC for the 2006-07 television season.

While the idea of a solid science fiction show on a mainstream network is certainly something to cheer for, I can’t help looking at the success rates of sci-fi shows on network tv and the even poorer success rates of anthology shows. I don’t really hold out much hope of seeing more than the initial three episodes.

Still even if the series doesn’t make it on ABC, there’s always the chance it could be picked up by cable after that. And if it does in fact succeed on network tv, wouldn’t that be something.
