Aeon Flux Bombs at the Box Office

Aeon Flux, starring Charlize Theron only managed second place for its opening weekend at the December 2nd weekend box office. Even worse it garnered a meagre $13.1 million. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire retained its first place and managed some $20.5 million in its third weekend, giving it a three week total of $229.8 million.

Aeon Flux was the only new wide release this weekend, in what is a traditionally quiet post-Thanksgiving schedule. The movie did manage to open higher than expected with estimates randing from $10 million to $13 million. However the movie cost some $60 million to produce and will struggle to make back its cost in future weeks as the Christmas blockbuster movies are released.

There was speculation that the movie was a dud when no pre-screening shows were held for Aeon Flux and online reviews have been pretty negative. This is the second poor performing film for Charlize Theron in the space of two months.
