Allison Mack Following Michael Rosenbaum Out of Smallville?

Things are not looking at all good for Smallville these days. First the series creators decide to move on to pastures new, then Kristin Kreuk (who plays Lana Lang) only signs up to do a few episode in the next season. Next Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) jumps ship.

Never mind there, there’s still Lois Lane and Chloe Sullivan for Clark to save right? Maybe not. It’s being reported that actress Allison Mack who has played Chloe Sullivan since the series began has started hinting that she might leave the show as well.

So far Mack hasn’t signe don for season eight and there’s some speculation that this is a negotiating ploy. With the cast diminished, producers really need to hold on to a few of the core characters if they want to keep the show going. Which makes it the perfect time to talk money.

At this point it’s looking as though even Mack decides to stay on, the show will limp through a final 8th Season before being put out of its misery. There’s always the small possibility that this could be turned around, but it would take a radical re-interpretation of Smallville and there’s no guarantee that the existing audience would tune in for that.

  1. Smallville is suffering sagging ratings, Michael Rosenbaum will not be returning in season 8, and now TV guide is reporting that Allison Mack, who portrays Chloe Sullivan, maybe leaving over contract negotiations. Chloe Sullivan is Clark Kent’s long time confidant, popular know it all can do anything heroin, and one of only a handful of characters who knows Clarks super secret identity.

Smallville may need to hold on to Allison, but only because the writers or producers seem stuck in the past. For years now Smallville has retreated again and again to storylines about meteor freaks (humans mutated by Kryptonite) and the tired moral message that keeping secrets is bad (sometimes secrets save us).

This is the same rehashed opinion of Mike Ausiello. People keep reporting his opinion as fact. The only thing that has always mattered on the show, and that it should be even more focused on in it’s last season, is Clark and his journey. Superman needs no sidekick and there are dozens of other villians for them to choose from, Braniac and Doomsday among them. Chloe was only a crutch that the writers used to keep Clark from developing too fast on his own, by having her do everything. She was merely a device to keep the show from moving too fast, and nothing more. Now that the show is going into it’s planned last season (yes, it was indeed planned to be the last one by even Al and Miles) Clark needs to start developing his reporter status very soon. That is something that has very very seldom ever happened with Chloe around. Killing (or writing) her off is the only way to properly finish this series. They have to remove the temptation of going the lazy writing route by having Chloe do all the research. With her gone Clark can finally make that final step towards being the reporter and Superman we all know. That’s something he’s not even close to. Also, I hate to break it to you, but the majority of the audience that watches Smallville are Superman fans that are watching it for Clark’s journey towards becoming Superman. The only characters that really matter are Clark and Lois. They couldn’t give a rat’s ass about Chloe. In the grand scheme of Clark’s story, she is less important than lint.

  3. The problem with that line of arguing is that she is actually popular with fans. Your assertion that everyone is watching the show for Clark’s journey is dubious and the notion that everyone who watches Smallville is a Superman fan isn’t remotely credible.

As for this season being planned to be the last… it isn’t the first season of Smallville that’s been planned to be the last.
