Are You Looking Forward To Shyamalan’s Airbender?

I was reading the latest news on M. Night Shyamalan’s next project Airbender (formerly known as Avatar: The Last Airbender). The Paramount Pictures production now has a release date of July 2nd 2010. The name change is a result of the James Cameron movie Avatar which will be released in December 2009.

Airbender is a live action movie based on a popular anime series and will be Shyamalan’s first project after the critically slammed (and largely rejected at the box office) movie Lady In The Water. In an interview with Empire, Shyamalan speaks very positively of the project and seems intent on giving it the same care and attention that he’s given his own works.

I wonder though, given the diminishing returns for Shyamalan, will audiences give him another chance at the box office? Will the fact that this is based of an existing franchise reign him in a little or will he again rely on his more annoying ticks?

I must admit I love Shyamalan’s work. Even his weaker movies have wonderful elements in them. They tend to be heavily criticised by science fiction fans because they don’t follow the rules of science fiction storytelling. I see them more as cleverly spun fairytales rather than solid world building science fiction. It’s as much or more about mood, atmosphere and character as it is about the actual plot. He really does need to get away from the “twist ending” though.

So, who is looking forward to Shyamalan’s Airbender?

Hi, I’m the man who ghost-wrote 6th Sense, Indestructable, Signs, and The Village–also A Beautiful Mind, Eternal Sunshine, Good Will Hunting, Star Wars (from a 1963 Novella called The Star War), Braveheart, V for Vendetta, Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, E.T., Austin Powers, and dozens and dozens more. 20 of the top 25 films all time, world wide are my concepts/characters/stories. Not Bond, not yippychiochiaye, not potter.
Shymalan cameos in all his flicks at my suggestion so I could identify his sorry bum. Lady was all his, so now you know the real difference he brings.

You don’t like my few ‘trick’ endings? Well, they got a heck of a lot of people to buy two tickets though, didn’t they? Yeah, THAT was the real trick, and it worked, too.
