Starpoint Academy

Interesting news from Peter Davd (writer of stuff). Peter is well known for (amongst other things) writing Star Trek novels and now he’s trying his hand at something else Roddenberry.

Gene Roddenberry’s “Starpoint Academy”

Peter announced that he had signed to write the screenplay for this new project over on his blog.

Based on another Gene Roddenberry concept (is that code for something he scribbled on a napkin?), “Starpoint Academy” is set to…

Tivo Hysteria

Well aren’t we all getting into a tizzy over nothing?

It seems that Tivo is going to extend its advertising a little further. Not only will there be star items on the menu, but when people are fast forwarding through commercials (no mention of the 30 second skip) they will see some form of “banner ad” which they can chose to click and get further information on.

For anyone paying attention this…

SF Movie Suggestions

Looking for something new to watch? Then you might want to wander over to SFSignal where they just happen to have produced a short list of movies that you probably haven’t seen and probably should.

I won’t spoil the list, but I will say that any list that recommends Hayao Miyazaki films (amongst others) is worth some consideration.

Next!

Thanks to SFSignal for bringing to my attention a new film based on a Philip K. Dick short story.

This time the story is “The Golden Man” and Nicholas Cage is being fingered to star. The film will be called Next and directed by Lee Tamahori from a script written by Gary Goldman ( who also adapted “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” into “Total Recall”).

In the film, Cage plays…

scrubbing bubbles shower cleaner commercial

No, I’m not sure what that is a reference too either. But it is a search term that someone used today. And not only that but in using it they somehow got pointed to my site.

Off the top of my head I don’t think I’ve ever referenced scrubbing bubbles in a post (until now) or indeed shower cleaner products in general never mind their commercials.

Sadly when I tried the same…

Latest Doctor Who Set Pics

Outpost Gallifrey continues its excellent coverage of the new Doctor Who series. Of particular interest these week is a whole bunch of new set pics. My personal favorite is this image of the TARDIS which looks better than previous TARDIS pics.

The news coming from this new series has been remarkably positive, despite concerns from some fans about particulars, such as the TARDIS, or the new series logo. The overall feel…

Nuketown

Nuketown is a site with a mission. Its tag is “A libertarian science fiction webzine” and thats what you’re going to get when you vist.

Kenneth Newquist has been running this site in one form or another for a long time by web standards. Longer I think that there’s been any form of Solar Flare. And that goes back 6-7 years now. Like Solar Flare, Nuketown has undergone some changes in…

SG-1 Season 8 Major Spoiler Posted

Thanks to Sci-Fi Ranter Girl for warning me (well all her readers actually) that over on Gateworld.com they have a major spoiler for the season eight finale of Stargate SG-1 right on the front page.

I’m not fanatical about my spoiler avoidance. I don’t mind previews or other minor spoilers. But I’d rather not have major plot point spoiled. I find it simply reduces my enjoyment of a show and I…

Incredibly Stupid? Incredibly Good.

John Byrne shows once again that he takes everything too seriously as he attacks The Incredibles for not taking superheroes seriously. Byrne unfortunately badly misses the point of Incredibles, so desperate is he to make his point. He also convenietly ignores the times when superheroes have been treated seriously (X-Men, X-2, Spider-man, Spider-man 2 anyone?). But hey when did facts ever get in the way of a good rant?

Over on…

Jarka Ruus Review

typecast:
1: cast repeatedly in the same kind of role
2: identify as belonging to a certain type;

The word of course is used to describe actors who are stuck playing the same parts again and again. But authors can find themselves in a very similar situation. After reading Jarka Ruus, it strikes me that that is exactly the situation Terry Brooks finds himself in.

Brooks first book, The Sword of Shannara, was…
