Authors I Enjoy - Briggs, Patricia
Patricia Briggs stars off a new occasional series for Solar Flare where I spotlight authors I enjoy reading. These may not be particularly well known authors, they’re probably not the hot authors that everyone is talking about but they do consistently put out what I consider fun reads.
Patricia Briggs has been publishing novels (with increasing frequency)since 1993. Briggs has mainly written stories set in what I would call a traditional fantasy setting. Although her most recent work ventures into the realms of modern paranormal fantasy.
Her focus is very much on character and the stories, while using many common fantasy tropes, rarely fall into cliche. You won’t find cutting edge writing, in these books, if like me you enjoy solid storytelling and enjoy the fantasy genre then I highly recommend her books.
I haven’t read all of Patricia Briggs work yet, and am particularly keen to get to her most recent works (Moon Called), but I really enjoyed the Hurog books - Dragon Bones and Dragons Blood. These two, like Briggs other books are intended to be read on their own, but combine to tell a larger story. The central character of both books is an unusual hero in many ways, but all the more like-able for it and her approach to magic is refreshing.
Another refreshing aspect to Briggs output is that in a field dominated by books the size of a telephone directory, Briggs prefers to publish compact and unpadded works that tell the story without wasting the readers time.
There is a solidity to the worlds that Patricia Briggs describes. Perhaps as a result of the efforts she goes to to research her settings and subjects, they feel real without requiring a 50 page appendix of background information.
