Babylon 5 Movie

ComingSoon! reports that the Babylon 5 Movie will start filming in April. The movie which is intended for theatrical release will be directed by Steven Beck.

Written by series creator J. Michael Straczynski, the B5 movie is called The Memory of Shadows. The storyline is that the technology of the ancient Shadow race is being unleashed by an unknown force. Earthforce intelligence officer Diane Baker’s brother is killed in a mysterious explosion and she attempts to find out who is behind the intergalactic conspiracy.

Joining her is Galen, a techno-mage who is charged with keeping the Shadow technology out of the hands of those who would abuse it.

That name may be familiar to those of you who saw the Babylon 5 spin-off Crusade, where he was a regular character.

I’m crossing my fingers on this one. I loved Babylon 5, was less impressed by Crusade, but felt it had potential. On the other hand the telemovie spin-offs really haven’t done too much for me so far. Hopefully JMS can pull out all the stops for a theatrical movie, but what worries me is that perhaps the absence of the over-arching plot that the tv-series had is what makes these one-off’s seem weaker.
