Baen To Launch Online SF Magazine
This story cropped up a few days ago, but I never quite got round to writing about it. It seems that Baen Books are working on an online science fiction magazine. The magazine will be called Baen's Astounding Stories and will be edited by author Eric Flint.
Flint said that Baen's Astounding Stories will be open to any sort of science fiction or fantasy stories with an emphasis on adventure stories. He went on to note that the main criteria would be "that it's orient toward a popular audience". My personal interpretation of this is look for science fiction and fantasy in the same vein that Baen publishes in book form, rather than the sort that Asimov's offers.
The empahsis seems to be on name authors and stories that are part of existing worlds and series. Baen is clearly looking to produce a magazine that makes money rather than win awards.
This won't be a free magazine and each issue will be available for $6 (or $15 for 3 issues). Alternatively there will be an option to buy individual stories. Baen's Astounding Stories will debut in June 2006 and will be published quarterly.
