Battlestar Galactica Season 3 To Premier in October 2006

The SciFi Channel has announced that the third season of its hit original science fiction series Battlestar Galactica will not begin airing until October 2006. Traditionally the SciFi Channel has split its seasons, airing the first half in the Summer and the second half around January (to avoid competing directly with the networks).

An October start for Battlestar Galactica will allow it to run all 20 episodes without any break however. Galactica’s ratings have dropped somewhat this season and one possible reason for that is that the show is heavily arc based. Running all the episodes without a break may well help.

SciFi apparently plans to run less arc-intensive shows in Battlestar Galactica’s traditional slot during July. This has read to some interesting speculation about what show will be run during July.

It’s worth noting that Doctor Who starts its Season One SciFi Channel run this week. By July the second season of Doctor Who will have aired in the UK and would be available for SciFi to air (they have an option on it already) if they wished.

Obviously for that to happen Doctor Who would need to score some good ratings, but while it does have a story-arc, one of the advantages of Doctor Who is that most of the episodes stand alone and don’t require any previous viewing.

  1. BSG has sometimes aired in the UK on Sky before the US (as did Babylon 5 once or twice, on Channel 4). Do we have any knowledge of whether this is again likely - or indeed whether Sky One have purchased Season 3 at all?

It wasn’t BSG’s best season but its still the best show on TV. The season fanale made up for it.
