Blake’s 7 Episode Guide - Season 1

Blake's 7 was created by Terry Nation who is best known to science fiction fans as the creator of the Daleks from Doctor Who. His original pitch for the Blake's Seven series was "Robin Hood in space" however, the end result was significantly different to the Robin Hood myth.

Blake's 7 ran for 4 seasons of 50 minute episodes on BBC 1 during which it radically morphed from one season to the next. One of the interesting aspects of the first season of Blake's Seven is how Nation slowly introduced the central characters a few each episode instead of the usual approach of overloading the viewer with a dozen new characters in a single episode.

In its first season the focus of the series was firmly on Roj Blake as the leader of a band of rebels against the Interstellar Federation. The federation was established in early episodes to be a fascist state and clearly modeled after George Orwell's 1984

Of course being a BBC sci-fi series the budget was tiny and the special effects less than special. However some of the design work (particularly on the Liberator) is remarkable and the small budget resulted in a heavy focus on character that is rarely seen in modern science fiction series.
