Blake’s 7 Returning To TV

Category: Science Fiction, Television

According to i09.com the British Satellite TV network Sky has order two 60 minute episodes of a new Blake's 7 production. The science fiction show originally ran on BBC for four seasons from 1977. It had virtually no budget and frequently suffered from wobbly sets. However it was hugely popular and gave audiences a much darker style of sci-fi than they were used to.

Sky is working with Blake's 7 productions who had previous tried to put together a mini-series in 2003. That project fell through but with the recent success of Battlestar Galactica, not to mention the returns of Knight Rider and The Bionic Woman, perhaps its finally time for Blake's 7 to come back to tv.

Blake's 7 fandom has remained active in the 27 years since the show finished its original run and interest has increased in the last few years with some Blake's 7 audio dramas being broadcast on BBC Radio.

It's not clear yet what direction the new Blake's 7 will take. I am hoping it will be a re-imagining of the series, going back to the early episodes and following through on that early vision removing some of the sillier elements.

Obviously modern special effects will allow for a much slicker product, but I do hope they keep the classic Liberator design. I don't see any way they could top that. I'm a huge Blake's Seven fan and dimly remember watching the original run as a child. Re-watching them more recently a lot of episodes don't stand up well. But the core themes are still strong and with the current world political situation it could be a very timely subject matter.

It seems to me it would be best if they go for a cast of unknowns to play the seven and try to

Hi,

Nice to know that B7 might be coming back. But please note that the original series ran for four series, not three.
There were a number of changes made to the last series (no Liberator, no Cally) but it did see a return of Blake in the first and last episodes.

Fixed. Thanks for catching that. I don’t know why I wrote three there.
