Captain America Movies and TV

While he hasn’t enjoyed the mainstream success of The Incredible Hulk, The X-Men or Spider-Man, Captain America has appeared in several different media as well as comic books. There have been two Captain America movies to date and also 2 Captain America tv movies.

Captain America In The Movies

The Captain’s first appearance in the movies was in 1944 in a movie serial called Captain America where he is a district attorney named Grant Gardner (played by Dick Purcell). In the serial, Captain America battles the evil forces of a villain named The Scarab after he poisons his enemies and steals a secret device capable of destroying buildings by sound vibrations.

The serial, which was directed by Elmer Clifton and John English, ran for 15 episodes with a running time of aproximately 4 hours.

In 1991 a direct to video film called Captain America was released which starred Matt Salinger as the Captain and was widely criticized at the time. The movie had a running time of 97 minutes and a PG-13 rating which it barely justified.

Matt Salinger playing Captain America in the 1991 movie. Directed by Albert Pyun, the script stuck to the core of the Captain America story, but took some significant liberties with the details, not least of which was making the Red Skull an Italian fascist. There was some interesting genre casting in this movie though. Ronny Cox (Stargate SG-1) as President Tom Kimball, Darren McGavin (Kolchak: The Night Stalker) as General Fleming and Bill Mumy as the young General Fleming.

More recently it has been reported that Marvel Entertainment is working on a getting a Captain America movie into production. They are also working on an Avengers movie which would most likely feature Captain America.

Captain America On Television

During the late 70s there were two live-action television movies staring the Captain. The first was called simply Captain America and the second Captain America II: Death Too Soon. Both movies stared Reb Brown as Captain America. Brown played a character noticeably different to that in the comics. While the character is called Steve Rogers this time, he is actually the son of the 1940s Captain America and has received an experimental chemical called the FLAG formula which enhances his strength and reflexes.

Clearly influenced by the tv shows and movies of the time, this Captain America makes heavy use of a specialized van and a motorcycle. The motorcycle in fact has a detachable round windshield which he uses as his shield.
