Could The Buffyverse Return on DVD?

There have been rumblings and mutterings about some Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel spin-off tv-movies for quite a while now, but nothing ever seems to come of it. The problem has always been getting a network to comit to showing these movies. The WB has paid some lipservice to the idea of an Angel TV movie, but never actually comitted to it.

So now there are rumors that series creator Joss Whedon could avoid the problem completely by producing some straight to DVD movies based around his Buffyverse characters. The possibility was publicly raised by former Buffy writer-producer Marti Noxon and has been given a further credibility boost by a recent interview with Anthony Stewart Head who played the watcher Rupert Giles in Buffy.

According to Head at least, one of the possible straight to DVD movies would be based on the Ripper series that was previously proposed to the BBC.

The idea is certainly interesting. A straight to DVD production would remove the network straightjacket that Whedon had to operate under. I’m not sure what sort of budget could be raised for something like this since there’s no real track record to base an investment on though. Certainly if any fanbase could sustain a series of straight to DVD movies it has to be the loyal Buffy audience.
