Doctor Who Children In Need Special Online
Thanks to Jeff Moore for bringing this one to my attention. For the BBC’s annual Children In Need telethon, Doctor Who filmed a short segment and the BBC have put that segment on line (see the link below). For those of you outside of the UK, Children in Need is a night long fund-raising show that the BBC runs which features segments from popular British stars and usually most of the BBC’s top programs.
The video is pretty small in size, but it does run for 8 minutes which is pretty cool. Don’t expect anything too amazing, but I was impressed that instead of just doing a completely comic thing this time out the producers managed to come up with a scene that will essentially string together the ending of the last episode of Doctor Who and the Christmas Invasion.
There were some interesting continuity bits too as I heard the TARDIS Bell ringing and the old “unstable regeneration” theme reared its ugly head once again.
It’s hard to judge David Tennant’s performance from this little piece. He seemed very over the top but he was supposed to be experiencing an unstable regeneration so that would kind of fit. Watching the end segments though I’m wondering why they didn’t let him speak with his Scottish accent, it’s not that strong and surely people would understand him just fine.

I also share your apprehension of yet another “unstable regeneration” subplot. Colin Baker (DrWho#6) got landed with that turkey for an entire season, and the resulting audience slump pretty much killed off the franchise. Let’s hope the instability is resolved quickly at the start of the next story - or at minimum, resolved within the Christmas Special - so that the next full series can commence with a fully capable Doctor ready to take us on to new adventures.
Regeneration is a genius plot device which has ensure the continuity and refreshment of the series, however any use beyond “introduce new leading actor” is simply technobabble for technobabble’s sake. Extended focus on regeneration alienates the existing audiences and makes sense only to fanboys and the writers (or worse, contradicts cannon so that it doesn’t make sense to the fanboys either). Use it, swap the actors, move on, bish-bosh-bang.
