Doctor Who Movie Talk

Filmstalker has a report about how some people at the BBC are working on a film version of Doctor Who. There don’t seem to be a lot of details to the reports yet, though a key element seems to be the idea that they get Billie Piper back to play Rose in the big screen version.

No mention of timetables, budgets, scripts or who would play the Doctor so I’d be inclined to class this as a wish list item for the BBC rather than an active project.

I’m really not sure about a Doctor Who movie to be honest. Unless BBC maintains total creative control I think the results would be unsatisfying for everyone. Doctor Who doesn’t work when played completely straight. There are certain conventions inherent in the series itself that must be followed for it to be successful.

However if people aren’t familiar with the show (and in the US most of them aren’t unfortunately) then those same conventions will come across badly. It’s a bit of a catch 22 and I don’t think you should let Hollywood anywhere near Doctor Who. There would be too many concessions made to the mass audience and the result would be a mess.

Now an BBC funded Doctor Who movie? That would be another matter entirely, but for right now I’d rather they focus on putting out several more seasons of quality Doctor Who
