Doctor Who Season 1 US DVD Release Date

Finally it looks as though those of us living in the US will be able to get Season 1 of Doctor Who on DVD legally (As opposed to the copies I have right now which just turned up on my computer one day. Honest!). Doctor Who: The Complete First Series will be released on February 14th 2006 for a retail price of around $99.

Don’t let the British naming convention confuse you. When they say the first series, they mean season 1. Doctor Who: The Complete First Series will be the same as the one released in the UK and will feature all 13 episodes from season 1 plus a host of extras.

This decision is a noticeable reversal from the BBC’s previous position which was to hold back a US DVD release for Doctor Who until after they had secured a broadcaster for the series here. On the surface at least, this looks like an admission that BBC is unable to come to terms with any channels in the US to show the series.

It’s a shame that none of the cable channels are prepared to pick up the show, but I’m glad that there will be a legal release of the DVDs.
