Doctor Who Season 2 Sci-Fi Channel Air Date!

Category: Doctor Who, Science Fiction, Television
published August 7th, 2006

In news that vindicates my reluctance to either post Doctor Who spoilers or further update the episode guide, it seems that The Sci Fi Channel will be airing the second season of Doctor Who here in the US this year.

According to reports it seems that Doctor Who Season 2 will debut on Friday 29th September at 9pm with the first two episodes airing as a 2 hour block and repeating immediately afterwards.

The following week will have Battlestar Galactica's 2 hour Season 3 debut. From then on Doctor Who will then occupy a regular 9pm slot on Fridays immediately before episodes of Battlestar Galactica. Thats about as strong a timeslot as they can really give it I think.

Season Two of Doctor Who stars David Tennant as the new Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose. There will apparently be a daytime marathon of the last 8 episodes of season one also on September 29th.

For those wondering, The Christmas Invasion will not be shown as part of this season 2 run, probably due to its odd 59 minute length, however there are rumors of plans to show it as some sort of special nearer Christmas. The scheduling as yet to be officially confirmed by Sci-Fi but appears in some NBC press releases.

This is great news. I was a little worried at the lack of official word from Sci-Fi particularly with the downwards ratings trend which Season 1 had (though I think at least part of that was the onset of summer). This sort of treatment from Sci-Fi makes me think that they really do value the show. They've put it in a prime slot on their top rated night and paired it up with their most popular show.

I'm going to stick with my no-spoilers approach (mainly because I don't want to spoil myself) but you can expect the episode guide to resume as the episodes air.

8/11/06 Update - It seems the original reports were incorrect (or something changed) and Sci Fi say they will be showing the Christmas Invasion as part of 2 hour season premier.

So they plan to skip The Christmas Invasion, air the rest of the series in order, and then show it, maybe, near Christmas after most of the rest of the season??
That’s… silly. The Christmas Invasion is dated within the plot, it’s not entirely self enclosed. There are a few reference to events from The Christmas Invasion in later episodes of the season. Mostly (or maybe I just think so because they’re freshest in my memory) in the two last episodes, but not just. And, being their first episode, it sets the relationship between Rose and the new Doctor.
Sounds like a very strange decision.

Actgually, the posting is wrong. Check out gateworld.net for the correct post.

[Post snipped. Gateworld.net is a good site, but that doesn't mean you should just cut and paste whole articles from it.]
