Doctor Who - The Aliens of London, Review

The Aliens of London is the first two part story from the new Doctor Who series and it addresses my one significant problem with the format of the new series. Namely that everything happens so fast that there’s no development.

The Aliens of London shows the series deft handling of action, horror and comedy again, but has the luxury of enough time to slow things down, and give some of the secondary characters room to breathe. Its hard to come to a conclusion on the story when I haven’t seen the second half of it, but so far I think it has helped.

The series does a remarkable job of respecting Doctor Who history while marking out its own territory. In this story we get a reference to UNIT without the need to explain any details of what the Doctor’s previous connection to them might have been. Thats the perfect way to deal with these things really and potentially opens up future stories if they ever feel they have the luxury of examining these things.

The special effects in this episode were very impressive and anyone complaining about them is quite frankly being an ass. This was in places every bit as good as Stargate. Though I do have to ask, did anyone else think the aliens looked more cute than scary?

Doctor Who is firing on all cylinders now. The new series has been a resounding success in my book and I can’t wait to see how this particular story ends.
