Doctor Who - The End Of The World, Review
The second episode of the new series of Doctor Who picks up straight where Rose left off and the breakneck place remains too. For the most part that's a good thing, but there are a few places in The End of the World where a slower pace might have allowed more development of both character and plot.
Christopher Eccleston shows again why he was a great choice to play the Doctor and his presence will definitely be missed in the second season that was recently commissioned. His Doctor is both eager to the point of manic, alien and human at the same time. His enthusiasm is infectious and you can see why Rose gets caught up in things.
Speaking of which Rose's reaction to being "out of time" as it were was a high point in the episode. It was a perfect way to pull in the viewer and allow them to relate to the events that were taking place on screen.
The story itself was classic Doctor Who. An enclosed area and a diverse group of aliens. Not close to the best implementation but a solid one. This is where the short 45 minute story length tells against the traditional Doctor Who storytelling methods. Still I believe there are two part stories later in the season.
Special effects this time out were truly spectacular without exception. It looks like the weaker elements in the first episode were simply a result of it being the first episode. This was episode was high in special effects and it clearly justified the extra money that is being spent on the new series.
One final mention goes to the slow reveal about the Doctor's background. Hopefully they'll never reveal too much about it, but this week we got the first mention of TimeLord and we still haven't heard the name Gallifrey. We do however have mentions of some sort of war and of him being the last TimeLord. Thats an interesting new twist that returns some of the mystery to a somewhat overexposed character.
I still don't feel this new season has reached its full potential, but already its good and the teaser for the next episode has my hopes up that its going to keep getting better.
