Encyclopedia Of Science Fiction 2007 Edition To Be Digital
SFSignal has a news item about how the next edition of The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction will be a digital publication available via subscription and updated on a monthly basis. The current version of The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction is a large and highly regarded tome, but it’s also about a decade old.
Think about just how much has happened in this genre in the last decade. Sure enough the new edition which is set for a 2007 release will be some 50% larger than the second edition was. Contributors to the encylopedia will include John Clute, Peter Nicholls and David Langford all of whom have a good pedigree to be working on this sort of project.
The big, and currently unknown variable here is how much a subscription to the digital version will cost. I’d suggest a yearly rather than monthly subscription fee, unless they can keep the price below $10 a month. I like reading these sorts of works, but I can’t see many people paying more than that no matter how good the work is.
