First Review of New Doctor Who Series
Category: Doctor Who, Television
published March 2nd, 2005
Q Magazine, a UK music magazine has published the first review I've seen of the new series of Doctor Who in its latest issue. Even better, the review is overwhelmingly positive. They describe the new Doctor Who series as "must-see TV for everyone".
The reviewer praised both Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper in their roles as the Doctor and Rose Tyler. He also praises the special effects saying that you get to see familiar landmarks come under attack.
The review gives the impression that the reviewer may have seen several episodes from the series. Of note are comments that "you don't have to be a geek to enjoy it" and "the slick, sharp dialogue" and "Who is no longer the domain solely for sci-fi spods". Could the BBC have done with Doctor Who what Sci-Fi has done with Battlestar Galactica?
Damn it why won't some channel in the US buy the series already?

I have seen the 1st episode. In case you don’t believe me, it starts off with Rose (the blond girl) working in a department store. She heads for the basement as the store closes and the manaquins start coming to life and head towards her in a menacing way… until the Doctor grabs her hand and runs off with her. She escapes and he sets off a bomb that blows the top part of the building.
The title sequence (tardis in a time tube while the main actor’s name appears in 3D0 is rather lame. nothing inspiring. The new DR. Who logo is allright (if you’re a 1st year design student and this is your 1st work).
The tardis is well made and looks like the one from the old series. The doctor is a bit too ‘normal’ and not mysterious enough for me. he doesn’t look like a timelord with his leather jacket and uses the sonic screwdriver every chance he gets.
The humour falls flat (particularly the ones with the mother) and the special effects (from her boyfriend getting glued to a trash bin to his morphing arms turning into hammers) look like they were produced 30 years ago on an amiga video toaster.
The inside of the tardis (which used to be awe inspiring and had a beautiful design, even the one from the William hartnell era) now looks ugly and un-inviting.
People will watch it because they love Dr. Who and mis it. but the reality is: this new series makes the Silvester McCoy era look like classic television.
The new Dr. Who (so far) is very much in-tune with the abysmal American film of a few years back and from the story, to the sets, to the costumes, to the dialogue only deserves a 3 out of 10.

Couldn’t agree more. I watched this tonight and it was shit. They play it for comedy, but it isn’t funny, so you end up with the worst of both
worlds. I actually think this was worse than the Paul McGann film, which is REALLY saying something. The writing was weak, Christopher
Ecclestone seemed to have escaped from a Homebase advert, Billie Piper was like something out of Eastenders (and not in a good way), the
direction was clumsy and amateurish, and the music was the worst that I have ever heard in a television series. Nil points.

What have the BBC done to this? Soon as the show finished last night, I replayed the Paul McGann movie which to be honest I thought was loads better than this pile of poop. They could have at least done a regeneration seq, even if to have chris putting on a paul mcgann wig at the beginning. I now prefer Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGan to this. Unless something drastic happens next week to change my mind. Too modern Too quick

I am afraid i may have to disagree with both of you. Dr Who is a cult classic, something that has been cherished for it’s slightly ropey special effects and questionable acting.
The new series may be guilty of ‘playing it for laughs’ more than the original but times have changed. As with any first episode in a new series the character development has to be sacrificed to lay the foundations for the plot, this was acheived with the introdcution of the Doctor, the living plastic (whether it will appear again remains to be seen), the Sonic Screwdriver, the Tardis and Rose.
All of this in 45 minutes and still suitable for kids.
I believe that Christopher Ecclestone will maintain the strong Doctor Who tradition for quirky actors with the bizarre social mannerisms of a time travelling alien, and the northen aspect only adds to the comedy.
I think this incarnation of Doctor Who contains a lot of the stylings of current society; Clean lines inside the Tardis, white almost clinical walls etc , and i for one am loving it (even if some of the camerawork was a little amateurish for a 10million pound series).

Actually the ratings have been solid for Rose. The average was just under 10 million with an audience share of over 40%. Basically Doctor Who won its timeslot convincingly.
I’m busy burning a copy of the episode now so I’ll be posting my review either today or tomorrow.

Of course Dr Who won its time slot - who hasn’t been waiting in anticipation ? But will anyone be there to watch next week or the week after that ?
How odd that the Tardis innards now look like those of the Lexx !

The fact that the ratings stayed high for the whole episode suggest that yes people will be watching next week. The positive reviews from non-fans also suggest it.

I enjoyed the episode. If you compare it to theprevious Dr. Who series
and the actors, etc and not the sci-fi of today it’s good. I have most
of the series from day 1 (only 37 episodes left to download) and having
watched most of the series it’s obvious it was never popular for special
effects or great acting. This Doctor reminds me of Tom Baker, who was
my favorite because of his sense of humor and attitude. Most of the
doctors improved after the first episode, so hang in there.
