George R. R. Martin’s A Feast for Crows Finally Finished

According to George R. R. Martin on his website, A Feast for Crows, the fourth book in the Song of Ice and Fire fantasy series is finally completed. But we’re not going to get to read it all in one go. No one who’s been following this series will be surprised to discover that Martin went long (and then longer) on writing A Feast for Crows. Each of the books in this series has been longer than the last.

This time, it got so long (he estimates close to 1800 pages in manuscript form) that the unavoidable decision was made to break it into two books. However it seems that instead of simply splitting it in half as has been the normal approach with huge books, Martin has decided to split the books by character.

A Feast For Crows will focus on Westeros, Kings Landing, the riverlands, Dorne and the Iron Island. The stories of the other characters will then be told in A Dance With Dragons which will focus on the east and the north. This means that most likely the series will run to seven books now and not six (thats assuming the next book isn’t even longer of course).

While I understand Martin’s argument for splitting the book in this fashion and can see the artistic case behind it, I must admit I’m disappointed. The reality is that I am far more interested in certain characters and storylines than others. Not actually seeing any movement on some of those things for a whole book will to be blunt… suck!
