Greg Widen To Adapt Solitaire Movie

Writer Greg Widen has been hired to adapt the science fiction thriller Solitaire for the big screen. Written by Kelley Eskridge, Solitaire is set in a future where the software and pharmaceutical industries are merging into a single powerful entity. The central character of Solitaire is a female computer engineer who is wrongly sent to an experimental prison.

The movie will be produced by Cherry Road Films who are currently producing the science fiction movie Southland tales (written and directed by Richard Kelly).

To be honest I’m not familiar either with Solitaire or Kelley Eskridge, but a quick search on Amazon showed that the book has received a largely positive response from those submitting reviews. It’s a little unfair to judge it without reading, but I have to say that it sounds rather dated. The setting seems like the sort of thing that was popular with science fiction writers in the late 80s and early 90s. Still I can see how this sort of scenario might work very well on a movie screen.

Greg Widen has been writing screenplays for a long time, but his hit rate is mixed. Yes he was responsible for Highlander. But he also wrote Highlander II and III etc. He did an episode of Tales From The Crypt many years ago (Half-Way Horrible) but beyond that none of his writing credits ring any bells with me.
