Halo Movie Aims For Summer 2007 Release

Fox and Universal have now closed their deal to make a movie based on the videogame Halo which has been a huge hit for Microsoft on their Xbox console. The studios will pay Microsoft about $5 million against 10% of the gross.

Universal will oversee production on the movie and will be handling.domestic distribution while Fox will handle foreign distribution. The studios will split the revenues from the movie 50/50.

The Halo movie will be produced by Peter Schlessel who served as a Hollywood liaison for Microsoft. The script is by Alex Garland (28 Days Later) who is receiving a million dollar paycheck from Microsoft who have already approved his script. Garland will however do a further rewrite based on notes from the studio.

I’m not really sure what to make of this one. I find it hard to picture how a game like Halo can be translated into a movie and really relate to the game in any significant way. Sure you can set a story “in the same universe” or something. But then really all you’re buying for your $5 million is the name.

Of course the name Halo might be worth $5 million.
