Invasion - Lights Out Review

The second episode of ABC’s new science fiction series Invasion followed on directly from the first. The feel of these two episodes has been more like that of a mini-series than of a continuing series. Without the driving force of the hurricane to propel it though, this episode seemed much slower and less urgent than the pilot.

It looks as though the general feel of Invasion is going to be a mixture of creep weirdness and soap opera personal elements. The fact that all of the central characters are somehow related to each other is a little over the top for example.

As I mentioned, the pacing in Lights Out was noticeably slower than in the first episode of Invasion. There was less action and more reaction. However at the end of the episode we really were none the wiser about what was going on than we were at the end of episode one. The style of storytelling rather reminds me of Lost in the way we are ever so slowly teased with revelations and additional mysteries.

Probably the most interesting character right now is the Sheriff who comes across as incredibly creepy. I’m sort of hoping that we’re being lead down the wrong path about the Sheriff, but since none of the other writing in the show has been that subtle we probably aren’t.

Right now the show just needs an extra something to boost it. Either more compelling characters (most of them are cyphers right now) or a twist that we didn’t see coming. Without that I can see myself losing interest before the end of the season.

Eoghann Irving is amongst other things the creator and Editor of Solar Flare. He has a life long interest in all forms of science fiction and fantasy and a pressing need to share this interest with anyone who will listen. Find out more at his personal website eoghann.com..
