Invasion: Pilot Episode, a Review

ABC’s new science fiction series Invasion. Judging by the look of the pilot episode, this is a big budget affair. The hurricane scenes were impressive as were the opening scenes with a plane flying into the eye of the storm. It’s hard to come to any real conclusions about this series based on just this episode though.

The basic concept of Invasion is that in the aftermath of a hurricane there are signs that it may actually have been a cover for some sort of alien invasion. However, from what we see in the first episode, it seems as though there may already have been some alien presence in the town before the hurricane arrived.

As is the way with pilot episodes, we’re introduced to a lot of characters very quickly and really its hard to get a good feel for most of them. They did, however, manage to get across the central concept of the show and sow plenty of seeds for future episodes.

I’m not sure how well this story is going to extend. When you consider that there’s 22 episodes to a season, there’s a real danger the story may lapse into some sort of X-Files like confusion where nothing is ever answered and more and more mysteries are just piled on.

But that’s a worry for the future. For right now they’ve got me interested enough that I’ll be recording Invasion again next week. I think this is the most promising new science fiction series of the season.

It really was quite good, although the acting on “Threshold” is far better (with the exception of the actor playing Cavanaugh). The premise and production values on this show were a cut above “Threshold”. It will be interesting to see how the season progresses.
