James Doohan Dies at Age 85

Actor James Doohan, best known for playing the role of chief engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott in the original series of Star Trek and the films that followed died on July 20th at his home in Redmond, Washington. He was 85.

Doohan died early in the morning with Wende, his wife of 28 years at his side. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimers.

Born on March 3rd 1920 in Vancouver, B.C, James Doohan was a successful character actor before he took on the role of Scotty in the NBC series Star Trek. When Star Trek ended in 1969 Doohan (like most of the cast) found himself typecast as Scotty. However as Star Trek’s fan following grew Doohan attended many fan gatherings around the country and reprised his role in six of the Star Trek movies.

I remember seeing Mr. Doohan also appear in a memorable (to me at least) episode of
Stat Trek: The Next Generation, in which he assisted Chief Engineer O’Brien, played by Colm Meany.

Many people don’t seem to know about another side of James Doohan that I learned a few years ago. I’m a history lover and I was quite interested to find out that he was a combat wounded veteran (he lost the middle finger of his right hand) during World War II. He was a Captain in the Canadian Artillery and served in the D-Day Invasion.
