John Hodge To Write The Dark Is Rising Movie
Several months ago (back in May I think) I wrote about the fact that Walden Media was planning to produce a film based on Susan Cooper’s book, The Dark Is Rising. Well now comes news that some progress is being made. Writer John Hodge (Trainspotting) has been hired to write the adaptation for the movie while Marc Platt (Legally Blonde) is producing the film along side Alex Schwartz and Evan Turner of Walden Media.
The Dark is Rising is the second book in Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising Sequence. The story is about a boy who discovers he is the last in a line of warriors who dedicate their lives to fighting the forces of the Dark. The Dark is Rising was originally published in 1973 and the other books in the series are Over Sea, Under Stone, Greenwitch, The Grey King and Silver on the Tree.
The Dark is Rising books are some of the best children’s fantasy books ever written and I still re-read them from time to time. They are comparatively short and could potentially translate very well to the movie format, with the right people working on the project.
John Hodges has a comparatively short list of film credits but has written most of the films directed by Danny Boyle including: Alien Love Triangle, The Beach, A Life Less Ordinary, Trainspotting and Shallow Grave.
Eoghann Irving is amongst other things the creator and Editor of Solar Flare. He has a life long interest in all forms of science fiction and fantasy and a pressing need to share this interest with anyone who will listen. Find out more at his personal website eoghann.com..
