Jon Favreau To Direct John Carter of Mars Movie

Variety is reporting that Paramount has signed Jon Favreau to direct their movie John Carter of Mars, an adaptation of the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction stories. Burroughs wrote a total of 11 books of John Carter’s adventures on Mars and Paramount has hopes this movie could launch a new franchise for them.

The story of the movie has a Civil War Veteran retreating into a cave to avoid capture by Apache Indians. He finds himself tranpsorted via a time portal to the planet of Barsoom and then taken prisoner by 12 foot tall green men.

John Carter of Mars is aimed at a 2006 release and the script is by Mark Protosevich with a re-write by Ehren Kruger.

Burroughs John Carter books are certainly sci-fi classics, but they’re also quite dated in a lot of ways as the story synopsis shows. So the big question is how will they update the story so that it plays for modern audiences without losing what makes it what it is.
