J.R.R Tolkien’s The Children Of Hurin To Be Published

I was under the impression that every last scrap of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth writing had been published by this point, what with The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The Book of Lost Tales (1 & 2) and the entire History of Middle-Earth series. Apparently I was wrong.

Tolkien’s US and British publishers have announced that they will be publishing his epic tale The Children of Hurin. His son Christopher Tolkien has apparently spent many years editing this unfinished story into a complete work. The core of the story (which is set long before the events in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit) has been published in various forms previously. If I’m not mistaken there is a shortened version of the tale in The Simarillion.

The Children of Hurin will be published by HarperCollins in the UK and by Houghton Mifflin in the United States.

I can’t help but feel this is a rather cynical exercise to cash in on the renewed popularity of Tolkien’s works. But perhaps I’m being unfair. The Children of Hurin in its raw form was certainly an epic story and careful editing might turn it into something very readable.
