Magician’s Gambit by David Eddings, a Review
Magician's Gambit is the third and middle book in David Eddings Belgariad sequence of books. It continues the story of Garion, Silk, Barak, Belgarath and Polgara in a similar vein to the previous two books. Which is to say a blend of light-hearted banter and action.
I can't imagine that anyone is likely to come into the series on third book as its very much part of one big story. Eddings makes it easy enough for the reader to do so though and anything you need to know is conveniently recapped through conversation between the characters.
The focus of Magician's Gambit is on Garion's growth. He now knows that he is a sorceror like Belgarath and Polgara, but he has not yet come to terms with this. If in many ways the whole story of the Belgariad is the story of Garion reaching manhood, then this is appropriately enough the mid-point in that story.
For the first time in the story we get a new point of view as Eddings delves into the character of Ce'Nedra who will become over the course of the next couple of books, almost as important as Garion himself. That is a refreshing change at this point in the story.
In essence though, nothing has changed. Eddings style is at its best in this series and his more annoying foibles are not allowed to dominate the story.

This is one of my favorite Eddings books, a must read for anyone who intends to read anything by him at all. We learn about our new friends and how their lives led them to this point in time. You will fall in love with Silk, the nimble thief who is fighting for his justice and helping anybody for the sake of feeling better. We meet some new people such as the brave Mandorallon and the beautiful CeāNedra.
