Mixed Reviews For A Scanner Darkly

Aint It Cool News have posted some mixed reviews from an early screening of the movie A Scanner Darkly. The movie is based on the Philip K. Dick novel of the same name. Philip K. Dick was a unique presence in the science fiction field and extremely influential.

However, while his work has inspired several movies, they have rarely treated the source material with much respect. A Scanner Darkly uses a distinctive animation technique and claims to be much more faithful to the novel than is normal.

The three reviews that Aint It Cool News posted are rather different in their tone. Two are largely positive, with just some minor quibbles while the other is overwhelmingly negative. The negative review complains about the rotoscoping animation style used (though he clearly didn’t like it when used on Waking Life either). He also complains about the confusing nature of the story. It’s worth noting that the story is confusing in the novel too, and that was a deliberate stylistic thing on Dick’s part.

Right now I’m more inclined to believe the two positive reviews, but then again I’ve only seen a trailer.
