Musical Version of The Lord of the Rings In The Works
There’s always that point when no matter how much you like something you think things have gone to far. I’ve hit that point with the news that producers are working on a musical version of The Lord of the Rings to open in Toronto in March 2006.
Producer Kevin Wallace said that the musical would be a hybrid of”text, music, specatacle and physical theater”. The music is being written by A.R. Rahman, a Bollywood film composer.
Now, maybe its just because I’m not much for stage musicals, but on the other hand I love old Hollywood musicals. I just think that The Lord of the Rings is utterly unsuitable subject matter for a musical. I honestly can’t think of anything that a musical version could add to the story to justify its existance.
