New Bionic Woman Series
Category: Science Fiction, Television
published October 10th, 2006
It seems that NBC Universal are set to produce a remake of the 70's sci-fi show The Bionic Woman. The series, which starred Lindsay Wagner was a spinoff of the popular show The Six Million Dollar Man and ran for three seasons from 1975 through 1977 (the first two years on ABC and the final season on NBC).
Before everyone groans at the idea of resurrecting a cheesey 70's sci-fi show, keep in mind that the executive producer on this will be David Eick who holds the same role on the SciFi Channel's Battlestar Galactica re-imagining.
Eick has teamed with writer Laeta Kalogridis (Birds of Prey) to work on what he describes as a completely reconceptualized Bionic Woman. If he's to be believed this won't be a sequel or a traditional remake. In fact he's quoted as saying:
"We're using the title as a starting point, and that's all."
Apparently this new series will explore amongst other things nanontechnlogy and also the role of professional women in contemporary society. I'm not quite clear how that will mesh with a weekly hour long drama show, but Eick is quoted as saying:
"It's using the idea of artificial technology as a metaphor for what contemporary women sometimes feel is necessary to do everything that needs to be done,"
Eoghann Irving is amongst other things the creator and Editor of Solar Flare. He has a life long interest in all forms of science fiction and fantasy and a pressing need to share this interest with anyone who will listen. Find out more at his his website eoghann.com.| 2.9 |

A remake of the Bionic Woman???? Hmmmmm. Considering that the whole point of that series was the way that the leading lady used her bionics and used them to behave in a way that made her somewhat super human, how does the director of the re vamped new tv show intend to create a show that is both stunning visually and have great story lines??? One wanders if this is just going to be “Sex In The city” meets “The Office.” If this new Bionic Woman has none of the abilities that her 70’s counterpart had then what is the point? Having great bionic powers was what made that series watchable especially as a youngster.

[...] According to Solar Flare, the new Bionic Woman TV series is going to be a lot more than Lindsay Wagner weeping, getting chloroformed, and looking upset about having to fight bad guys. Instead, according to show creator David Eick, who is also co-creator of the SciFi Channel “reboot” of Battlestar Galactica, it will deal with what it means to be a woman in contemporary society. Ughhh. The BW re make already sounds disappointing. If theyre not going to remake it, so the Bionic Woman isn’t dealing with world threats but with Desperate Housewife crap, then this project is doom to failure.

The new Battlestar Galactica is an awesome television show and most certainly a reinvisioning; however, it certainly resembles the original and that sense of nostalgia is a part of its charm. No doubt the changes that were (and continue) to be made have been a 100% improvement (not that the original was bad).
What we have here with this new “Bionic Woman” sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen. “It’s using the idea of artificial technology as a metaphor for what contemporary women sometimes feel is necessary to do everything that needs to be done.” That is an absolutely ridiculous statement. I can’t even comprehend what the guy is talking about. Of course, I am not a contemporary woman.
DO NOT use the title of you aren’t going to have Jamie Sommers in it.
I realize how much I sound like one of the people that complained about BG when the changes were announced. I was not one of them. I kept an open mind and waited to see how it would turn out (and I have been beyond pleased with the result).
This time, no; I am not going to wait. I’m saying right now they are going to blow it. If they release the show with a different title — fine. I will then keep an open mind and check it out. But you cannot use a title for something that has nothing to do with the original.
So they either need to CHANGE THE TITLE or give a better description of what they are doing.

“cheezy 70’s sci-fi show”?? Was always in the top ten to top twenty every week. Yes, some of the scripts were a little out there; but why is Universal Studios holding out on “The Six Million Dollar Man” AND “The Bionic Woman” releasing them in the US on DVD?…Because of their continued world-wide popularity! Why do the thing the three reunion movies were made (well, besides possible tv pilots with the first two)?..much like Star Trek, audience demand for more.

Ok…as a big fan of the original SMDM and BW…NBC tried to revive these series before (realizing how popular they still were in other countries in reruns) back in the late eighties with two different pilots: One involving Steve Austin’s son as the new bionic man and the other with Sandra Bullock before she became Sandra Bullock as the new bionic woman. Both were ratings block-busters as tv movie, but the network didn’t pick them up. If they want to redo one of these, make it serious drama to the next level that Lindsay Wagner fought and pushed the three years (to the point of mental and physical exhaustion) to make it…she tried to focus the character as an independent, strong minded every day woman that just happens to have special abilities…not much different than any woman of the era or today who can play the violin or is a top brain surgeon, etc. You know what I mean. I’d like for them to keep the super-human abilities with great FX…a top agent/spy fighting in the world’s underworld, etc. but with serious drama and no silliness just to appeal to the kids.

I’ll give the new bionic woman a chance, but i’ll forever be in love with
Lindsay Wagner. ( btw Happy Birthday Linds).
and still impressed with the new battlestar galactica.
now if David eick would only turn his attention to LOST IN SPACE.
i would die a very happy person.

why tamper with a good thing, The original series were great in there day a great gimick. The Bionc Woman took off quicker because the Bionic Noises had been invented by the time her show came out. When Six Mill came out there were no bionic sounds.Very disappointed with Bionic Effects and sounds in the TV movies, Whenever Steve and Jaime jump there was no electronic high and low pitch sound we all grew to love when they are going up and down, plus suddenly they have the ability to leap like wonder woman five stories and stuff inconsistent,Steve’s Son is never seen again, what of Kate mini Bionic woman in movie two are never seen from again either in the last movie where they for the wedding, you would think they would attend. And Lee Majors Junior is in all three movies, nepetism galor!also major flub even though the series were on different networks on the bionic woman Maxillion is never mentioned on the Six Million Dollar Man sheesh just briefly in movie one when Steve talks to Rudy. And Why is it that Rudy and Oscar’s toupee’s never get gray, Rudy looks younger than Steve! Also The last years scripts of the six million dollar man were pretty boring!!!!!!!!!
The last season of the Bionic Woman started off great with Fembots in Las Vegas a true bionic classic and even The Bionic Dog opened the sesson well but as the season drue on the script became more childish and comic book with bad sci fi effects bad Max stories and the biggest flaw of all jaime sommers was never shown in the classroom in the third season not once whats up with that schoolteacher!DON’T GET ME WRONG I LOVE BOTH SHOWS BUT THOSE FLAW ALWAYS BOTHERED ME.I will watch the pilot to the new series and that one viewing if it doesn’t meet up to par will pass on future episodes.

A new series! well a new concept will not work unless parts of the original story are involved. I don’t think people would like to see a new bionic woman. The story have a chance to be succesfull if they add Lindsay Wagner as the new bionic woman’s mother. The idea of Jaime and Steve’s daughter being bionic and how they deal with that would a succes

I watched and generally enjoyed both series as adventure stories. As science fiction, though, they were absolutely terrible. Steve and Jamie so often picked up one half of a car with their bionic legs and bionic arms—ane completely non-bionic backs in between! Or ran at 60 mph…with the non-bionic arm swinging in rythm right along with the bionic one.

Hi, I roughly agree with most of the
above. Firstly I’m worried that the
hands involved in the remake of BSG are
involved in the new BW as I loved the
original BSG and hated the new remake
and so did most of 20mill Aussies as
it was promptly axed here. So I have
massive reservations on that. Secondly,
remember LW won an emmy award for her
portrayl of JS, she was as real and
believable as you could get, so pls
dont break the mold and you have big
shoes to fill if u wanna win another
emmy. Thirdly why is there an orig BW
who is the arch enemy of JS, is she a
rouge agent or something? Fourthly,
keep the whole secret agent/school teacher
thing, I loved it and the whole battle
for the earth’s survival against aliens
and super villans, now that’s ace tv.
Fifthly, in Australia we’ve had all the
original out of DVD for ages I have
Season 1 and 2 of BW so why not in
US that’s bizarre? Sixthly I would
love to see Wonder Woman come back but
realistically they cant even get
their act together on getting the
movie off the ground because Lynda
Carter as Wonder Woman is literally
burnt into our brains and they can’t
find anyone who can shine a light on her
may be her daughter in a few more years
Seventhly, I hope they bring back Steve
Austin and the Bionic dog at some
point, seriously, give us continuity or call the
show something else. I am very much
looking forward to seeing the show
with an open mind, BRING IT ON. Can you
please bring back Lindsay for a cameo,
now that would be smart on everyone’s
part.

hi there a spinoff would be good as long as they star lyndsey wagner because she could put the
new bionic woman through her paces. Also since the new one is british this should be good
and have excellent writers, they need to update the show but still have the flare
just likee Doctor Who. Love you all…..

I watched the pilot.. Like everything else on TV it was
way over the top… Everything had to blow up, the chick
playing Jamie Summers suddenly knew martial arts in one,
and haven’t there been laws on the books for years now
about the sensationalizing of smoking on TV and in the
movies? The scene cuts were so fast I couldn’t tell who
were the good guys and who were the bad guys. And who is
this boyfriend? Is he a teacher, a surgon and super spy
all in one? I mean c’mon…..
On a scale of 1 to 10 I give it a 4. But that’s my
opinion.

You weren’t the only one who liked Birds of Prey. I liked it, too! I saw the remake Bionic Woman pilot, I wasn’t impressed. Why did they remake the Bionic Woman and not the Bionic man? The sole female superhero thing is so cliche nowadays. What could they possibly do with the idea that we’ve already seen on Buffy, Xena, the Wonder Woman comics, and the original Bionic Woman?

I think I was the only person who liked Birds of Prey. We need something other than cop shows on T V.
