New Buffy the Vampire Slayer Novel from Keith RA DeCandido
Author Keith RA DeCandido has been comissioned to write a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer book according to a post on his LiveJournal site. The book which is scheduled for a July 2006 release will be focused on the 1970s slayer Nikki Wood who we saw briefly in the episode Fool for Love.
DeCandido says that the novel will not only feature Nikki, but also her three-year old son Robin (who we were introduced to as an adult in Season 7), her Watcher Bernard Crowley, Spike and Drusilla. The whole novel will be framed by a Sunnydale sequenc featuring some “familiar faces.”
DeCandido had this to say on the setting for the novel:
I grew up in NYC in the 1970s, and remember the summer of 1977 in particular very well (the Yankees in a pennant race with newly arrived superstar Reggie Jackson, the blackout, the Son of Sam murders, the city still a fiscal disaster area), and it’s the perfect backdrop for a Slayer’s adventures.
The author plans to begin work on the novel this October. This sounds pretty cool. I’m not generally a big fan of tv-tie in novels because I often find that the material just works better on tv. However, using books to explore the side characters and the wider universe of Buffy the Vampire Slayer seems like a great idea.
