Octavia Butler RIP
Hugo and Nebula award winning SF writer Octavia Butler died on February 25th 2006 at her home in Seattle according to a report by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Butler, who was 58 succumbed to injuries after she recently fell and hit her head on a walkway.
Butler was first published in the 1971 Clarion anthology with her story Crossover. Since then she published some 20 books. Her most popular series were the Patternist, Xenogenesis/Lilith’s Brood and the Parable series.
As well as her Nebula Award and two Hugo Awards, Octavia Butler also received the PEN Center West Lifetime Achievement Award and was the only science fiction writer ever to receive the $295,000 MacArthur Foundation fellowship.
The Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame in Seattle will be hosting a memorial service for Butler on March 2nd 2006 at 7:30 pm.
