On Reading Graphic Novels
Kevin Melrose at Thought Balloons brings to my attention an excellent article by Rick Kleffel about his introduction to the world of graphic novels and the problems he had initially reading them. Its a great and very respectful article that looks at the differences between graphic novels and regular fiction without demeaning or diminishing either form.
Kleffel recognizes the form as just that, rather than solely identifying it with the superhero genre and shows considerable interest in the variety of work available. But its also interesting to read why he was so reluctant, for so long to actually read graphic novels. Its not simply an issue of a stigma attached to them. He points out that the nature of reading a graphic novel is inherently different to reading a prose novel. Good stuff.
