Peter Jackson Sues New Line Cinema Over Lord of the Rings Profits
Well actually its Peter Jackson’s production company which has sued New Line Cinema and its specifically over profits from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, but that would have made far too long a title.
The suit alleges that New Line along with Katja Motion Pictures (its subsidiary) failed to properly calculate revenue from Fellowship of the Ring. it goes on to claim that New Line gave favorable treatment to its affiliates when it negotiated licensing deals for the moving, thus hurting revenue further.
Given that the film grossed over $314 million at the box office in the US alone and some $556 million worldwide, not including assorted rental, DVD sales and licensing money this is a big big issue.
On the other hand I don’t think I’d ever bet against a film company on this one. They have in the past been able to prove that successful films never actually made any money at all. Its amazing what lawyers and accountants can do when motivated.
