Peter Jackson To Direct The Hobbit for MGM?
It’s now being reported that MGM which owns the rights to The Hobbit, have plans to release it in one or two installments. They also want Peter Jackson to direct, but he hasn’t signed anything yet.
The information comes from a Variety article which talks about MGM’s attempt to get back into movie production in a big way. MGM have about 6 big budget ($150 to $200 million plus) movies ready to unveil. Those projects include Terminator 4, a sequel to The Thomas Crown Affair and of course The Hobbit. This is in addition of the already announced Pink Panther sequel, James Bond 22 and Rocky Balboa.
All of these movies are franchises that MGM owns the rights to as part of its 4000 title library. MGM hope to release two or three of these “tentpole” movies each year with partners taking some of the financial burden off the movie studio.
Of course there have been rumors for a little while about a Hobbit movie, but this is the first 100% legitimate confirmation of it I’ve seen. Right now though Peter Jackson is just a wishlist item for the project. Keep your fingers crossed.
