Queen of Sorcery by David Eddings, a Review

Queen of Sorcery is the second book in David Eddings first fantasy series, The Belgariad. It continues the story of Garion, and his assorted companions as they chase after the Orb of Aldur. The story takes us to several new countries and introduces many new characters.

The style and feel of the story remains the same as the first book though and its safe to say that if didn’t enjoy Pawn of Prophecy there’s not much chance you’ll enjoy Queen of Sorcery. Although ostensibly aimed at adults, the young protagonist combined with the simplistic writing style makes it more suitable for children and teens.

There’s nothing particularly innovative or new about the story that Eddings tells and if you’re looking for insights into the nature of evil… well this was the wrong book to read. What makes the book is the characters, most of whom are simply appealing to read about.

I first read this book some 15 to 20 years ago (I’ve lost track exactly) and re-reading it was like being re-introduced to some old but very familiar friends. Their quirks and traits are both reassuring and amusing to note.

Is this great writing? No. Is it good writing? In places yes, in others no its clunky. But above all else it’s plain fun. And sometimes that’s exactly what a person needs.
