Review: Doctor Who Season 4 - Planet of the Ood

Okay I’ve decided I like the opening theme. Sometimes it just takes me a while. The Ood appeared in a previous episode where they were used very effectively so I was looking forward to another episode featuring them. Once again I’m impressed by the special effects. It looks like they must have had a bigger budget this year or they’re using it much more effectively than before.

Initially Ood seemed to be acting in the same way they had last time round, being possessed or controlled by something. But this time we get to find out a little more about the Ood and what they are. The episode digs around at the issues behind a race that “lives to serve” and whether they are really anything more than slaves.

The tension rises steadily as layers are added to the mystery and by half way through I was really eager to find out what was really going on. They psychopathic guard was a bit over the top mind you. That bit only seemed to exist to set up a chase sequence and cliffhanger in the middle of the episode.

Donna Noble is working out well as a companion and her more antagonistic role forces the Doctor to explain himself a bit. There’s some interesting foreshadowing too. That’s the second mention of the disappearing bees.

I know I’m repeating myself but I really like David Tennant as the Doctor. I feel he’s found the perfect combination of enthusiasm and ruthlessness. So I’m a little nervous about all the hints that are being dropped this season about what’s coming. I hear he’s signed up for the specials next year though. So I guess I shouldn’t get too worried.

Eoghann Irving is amongst other things the creator and Editor of Solar Flare. He has a life long interest in all forms of science fiction and fantasy and a pressing need to share this interest with anyone who will listen. Find out more at his personal website eoghann.com..

Hey Eoghann, have you heard that Russel T Davies is leaving after the three specials next year? He’s being replaced by I think the guys name is Stephen Moffat, somebody Moffat anyway. Is that the one you said did particularly good episodes?

  2. Steven Moffat, yup he’s the one who’s stories I really like. He did The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances two parter in the first season, The Girl In the Fireplace in the second season and Blink from the third season. I think they were all nominated for Hugo awards and he won twice.

Great choice to take over the show.
