Robert Downey Jr. To Play Iron Man

Variety has reported that Robert Downey Jr. will play the role of Tony Stark in Marvel’s Iron Man live action movie which is to be directed by Jon Favreau.

Tony Stark is a wealthy industrialist who invents a high-tech suit of body armor which gives him super powers. Not much is known about the plot of the movie yet and how it will compare to the comics version.

It is a little ironic certainly that in the comics Tony Stark is in fact an alcoholic, while Downey Jr. has had many publicized battles with substance abuse. Marvel has indicated however that Stark’s alcoholism is not expected to be a sub-plot for this first movie at least.

The first movie, will primarily be an origin story and will deal with Tony Stark inventing the Iron Man armor and his past as a weapons inventor. Principal photography is set to begin in February and Iron Man is scheduled for release in May 2008.

I think this is a great piece of casting, not just because I always enjoy Robert Downey Jr’s acting, but also because I think his physical style will allow him to act even while wearing the Iron Man armor which if kept similar to the comics will be very limiting.

Now that the Cold War is over Ironman hasn’t been very good, so I wonder what the story will be.
