Sci-Fi Podcast Roundup #1
Welcome to what I hope to make a weekly feature at Solar Flare. Podcasting has taken off in a big way in the last few years and there are a lot of podcasts for science fiction and fantasy fans to enjoy. I hope to use this feature to highlight some of the great material that’s out there.
Podcast Spotlight - I Should Be Writing
Mur Lafferty has produced 87 episodes of her podcast I Should Be Writing and an additional 30 specials. She described her podcast as:
The podcast for wanna-be fiction writers, by a wanna-be fiction writer.
I Should be Writing is an oldstyle podcast if you like. It’s not a radio show, it’s not packed with audio effects. Most episodes are either a monologue from Mur or a discussion between her and her interviewee. The simple format definitely works to the podcast’s advantage, focusing all the listener’s attention on the subject under discussion.
While the target audience is of course writers and wanna-be writers, I think that anyone who is just interested in the process of writing would find a lot of interest. And if you like this, you may also want to check out Mur’s audiobook Heaven.
Check out Mur’s most recent podcast I Should Be Writing Special #30 is an interview with Jared Axelrod. There’s some excellent discussion that includes diverse subjects Neil Gaiman, making time to write and Jared’s own podcast.

Podiobooks Roundup
- Shadowmagic by John Lenahan
Shadowmagic is a rip roaring fun fantasy adventure novel by John Lenahan very loosely based on Irish mythology where every chapter ends on the edge of a cliff (or at least a high curb.) Join Conor as he grapples with typical teenage problems like, how to deal with a father’s high expectations, how to survive in the world on your own and how to woo a beautiful girl - that wants you dead. - Singularity by Bill DeSmedt
What if the cataclysmic Tunguska explosion of 1908 was caused, not by a meteor or a comet, but by a microscopic black hole? What if that fantastic object - smaller than an atom, older than the stars, heavier than a mountain - is still down there, orbiting deep inside the earth, slowly consuming the planet?
What if only a rookie government agent and an uncannily-insightful consultant stand between a renegade Russian billionaire and his plans to use the black hole to change history - or end it?
- The Pocket and the Pendant by Mark Jeffrey
When time mysteriously stops, young Max Quick must travel across America to find the source of this ‘temporal disaster’… Along the way, he and his companions encounter ancient mysteries, quantum Books, and clues to the riddle of stopped Time. But the more Max learns, the more it seems that his own true identity is not what he once believed…

And that’s it for this week. Of course this is just a tiny portion of all the sci-fi podcasts out there. If you know of one that I should include, or if you have a podcast/podiobook of your own, please let me know about it.
