Sci-Fi Podcast Roundup #2

This entry is part 2 of 7 in the series Podcast Roundup

Welcome to week two of my podcast roundup for fans of science fiction, fantasy and comics.

Podcast Spotlight - Slice of Sci-Fi

Slice of Sci-Fi is a long running podcast that focuses on sci-fi in television, movies, comics and new media. Hosted by Michael R. Mennenga, Summer Broks and Brian Brown, Slice of Sci-Fi offers up a light hearted mixture of news, interviews and discussion on anything genre related. There’s also a spin-off Voice Mail show devoted entirely to fan response.

Slice of Sci-Fi is part of the newer breed of podcasts and is a very slick production. If the format reminds you at all of a radio show, that’s probably because it is. Slice of Sci-Fi can also be found on XM Satellite Radio, Channel 163.

  • City of Masks by Mike Reeves-McMillan
In the city-state of Bonvidaeo, by custom and law everyone must wear a mask and act in character with it, or face civil, social and religious penalties. Gregorius Bass is sent to Bonvidaeo as the Envoy of Calaria, primarily to get him out from underfoot. Masked as the Innocent Man, and in the company of his radical young Bonvidaoan servant, Bass stumbles into mystery, intrigue, heresy and murder.
  • The Veingel by by Jeremy James
When an ancient religious cult hunts his people to the brink of extinction, Jequon, a half-angel, half-human badass fights for the survival of his noble race. But as his enemies’ holy-caust gains support from powerful officials in the U.S. government, our hero is forced to seek help from an unlikely source: a woman defined by her faith in the same God who wants him dead.
  • The Origin Scroll by Richard S. Tuttle
Origin Scroll by Richard S. Tuttle is a fantasy novel about three formerly insignificant young people who will meet and unite their special abilities to challenge the evil sorcerer, Sarac, before he destroys the Universes. Origin Scroll is the first volume of the Targa Trilogy. Dark Quest and Ancient Prophecy complete the Targa Trilogy.

One final thing before I close out this week’s roundup. Sci-Fi Ranter Girl posted a note on her blog that her podcast Lipstick Aliens is coming back. Maybe I’ll be able to add that into the round up next week.

And again I’d like to ask you to let me know if there are any podcasts you want to see added to the roundup.

Eoghann Irving is amongst other things the creator and Editor of Solar Flare. He has a life long interest in all forms of science fiction and fantasy and a pressing need to share this interest with anyone who will listen. Find out more at his personal website eoghann.com..

  1. Thanks for featuring City of Masks, Eoghann. So far I haven’t been promoting it as SF or fantasy, because it doesn’t have either sufficiently advanced technology or the magic that is proverbially indistinguishable from it. But everyone I show it to who knows their speculative fiction tells me it definitely belongs.

Or, in the words of another famous quotation, “Science fiction is what you point to when you say it.”

  2. Eoghann, thank you for including Origin Scroll in your Podiobooks Roundup. While not new to fantasy writing, I am new to podcasting. The group at podiobooks.com have been great in getting me started, and I encourage your readers to visit podiobooks.com to check out the multitude of free audiobooks there.

  3. @Mike Reeves-McMillan: I tend not to worry to much about precise definitions for science fiction and fantasy, after all I’m a reader not a librarian.

One of my favorite “fantasy” writers is Guy Gavriel Kay and many of his books feature little to no magic.

I’ve actually just added City of Masks to my feed and I’m looking forward to listening to it this week.
