Sci-Fi Travel E-Zine Launches In October
No you did read that title correctly. The Genre Traveler is an e-zine dedicated to the travel related interests of science fiction, fantasy and horror enthusiasts. Or at least thats what the press release I received said. Which sounded a bit different so I read some more.
The Genre Traveler will be a quarterly e-zine in PDF format. Each issue will feature vacation ideas and information about genre-related attractions. The first issue which will be released in late September will be a Halloween themed issue and includes an article on ghos hunting in Maryland with tips on how to find ghost tours around the world.
There's also an interview with Kealan Patrick Burke about his e-serial "Master of the Moors" about how he brought the moors to life in the serial. The issue also offers a preview of the Lord of the Rings musical which opens in Toronto next year, a look at the final stop of the world tour of The Lord of the Rings exhibition in Indiana and a peek at the Star Wars exhibit in Boston.
The current publishing schedule for The Genre Traveler sees it publishing quarterly throughout 2006 and hopefully moving to 6 times a year in 2007.
This sounds like a pretty cool concept for an e-zine and I hope that it proves successful. Sci-Fi is a real obsession for many people (says the person who posts a daily blog on the subject) so why not combine it with our vacations and travel?

Is it me or is there a sudden high interest in sci-fi lately?

It’s not just you, right now sci-fi is almost cool. Its a combination of things I think. We’ve had some big successful movies on the fantasy front with Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. We’ve also had the Star Wars prequel trilogy which is “acceptable” for non-geeks to be interested in. Then you throw in the ratings success the Sci Fi Channel has had with Battlestar Galactica and that has other networks looking at sci-fi shows again.
The media just loves a bandwagon to jump on and right now talking about sci-fi is a bandwagon.

Hopefully, Serenity will give it that extra push. I also think the 3 million that was raised for Star Trek helped to show that scifi fans are serious too.
