Science Fiction and Fantasy Books Meme
All right, its a science fiction and fantasy books meme courtesy of SFSignal. Get comfortable, this one’s going to be long.
Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror?
Fantasy followed by Science Fiction, never been much of a Horror reader myself
Hardback or Trade Paperback or Mass Market Paperback?
Mass market 90% of the time. I own Lord of the Rings in hardback, and I bought A Storm of Swords in Trade because I just couldn’t wait any longer.
Heinlein or Asimov?
Asimov. I guess its a little clunky and old-fashioned in places but it keeps me interested.
Amazon or Brick and Mortar?
Amazon, simply because the only brick and mortar close by is WaldenBooks.
Barnes & Noble or Borders?
Whatever is closest.
Hitchhiker or Discworld?
Hitchhiker. The only Terry Pratchett I’ve read so far is Good Omens (which I liked)
Bookmark or Dogear?
Memory.
Magazine: Asimov’s Science Fiction or Fantasy & Science Fiction?
I don’t read many short stories.
Alphabetize by author Alphabetize by title or random?
Author’s last name by preference. Random by practical reality (5 bookshelves in different rooms).
Keep, Throw Away or Sell?
I like to keep, but again reality intrudes. I winnow my collection from time to time and give what I won’t re-read to charity.
Year’s Best Science Fiction series (edited by Gardner Dozois) or Years Best SF series (edited by David G. Hartwell)?
Again, I’m not much of a short story reader. I barely have time for all the novels I want to read.
Keep dustjacket or toss it?
I try to keep them.
Read with dustjacket or remove it?
Always remove it. They fall off and get damaged.
Short story or novel?
Novels. I like to invest time with a set of characters.
Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
I haven’t read Lemony Snicket, I enjoy the Potter books though.
Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
When I’m tired.
“It was a dark and stormy night” or “Once upon a time”?
“Once upon a time”
Buy or Borrow?
Buy. I like to have my own copies.
Buying choice: Book Reviews, Recommendation or Browse?
Primarily browsing.
Lewis or Tolkien?
Tolkien. I love Narnia, but The Lord of the Rings was my entry to Fantasy.
Hard SF or Space Opera?
Space Opera, I’m not a science nut and am more into character than anything else.
Collection (short stories by the same author) or Anthology (short stories by different authors)?
Collection probably. There’s a greater chance I’ll enjoy whats in there that way.
Hugo or Nebula?
Don’t care. I just use their lists to see what new stuff I might want to sample.
Golden Age SF or New Wave SF?
I’m kind of getting into New Wave SF.
Tidy ending or Cliffhanger?
Tidy ending
Morning reading, Afternoon reading or Nighttime reading?
I read in bed, basically because thats when I have a chance to.
Standalone or Series?
Either is good. I’m not keen on the unending series though.
Urban fantasy or high fantasy?
High Fantasy, but Urban can be good too.
New or used?
New. I love new books.
Favorite book of which nobody else has heard?
Oooh. How about Other Lands by Jonathan Wylie anyone?
Top X favorite genre books read last year? (Where X is 5 or less)
1. Pandora’s Star by Peter Hamilton
2. Death of the Necromancer by Martha Wells
3. Storm Front by Jim Butcher
There’s a bunch more but I hate top lists.
Top X favorite genre books of all time? (Where X is 5 or less)
1. The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien
2. The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson
3. Foundation by Isaac Asimov
X favorite genre series? (Where X is 5 or less)
1. Pandora’s Star by Peter Hamilton (well its a two parter).
2. A Song of Ice And Fire by George R. Martin
3. The Dresden Chronicles by Jim Butcher

Bookmark or dogear: Memory? Wow! Yours is better than mine.
Wylie’s Other Lands does not ring a bell. But now that you mention it, if I see it on a book run, I’ll probable get it. Sarcasta-thanks!

I have a gift for numbers. Don’t ask me to remember anyone’s name but I can remember the exact page I was reading 24 hours later.
