Serenity Marks End of Firefly Saga Says Whedon
Or possibly not, but we don’t like to let facts get in the way of a good headline here in the blogosphere (god I hate that word). A heavily linked to article at Entertainment Weekly suggests that Whedon has now moved on from Firefly and Serenity after lackluster box office takings for the movie. This seems to have caused a firestorm all over the internet with people taking ridiculous stances based on a fragment of an EW.com interview.
Read the summary people. Read what it says, not what you think it says. Serenity did poorly at the box office and only pulled in around $25 million. While DVD sales are likely to significantly boost the movies profits, it certainly wasnt the blockbuster success that obsessive fans convinced themselves it would be.
Based on these facts Whedon has apparently acknowledged that it’s unlikely that the studio will go for a second Serenity movie. Not impossible, but unlikely. That isn’t giving up, its recognising reality. He doesn’t rule out working on something Firefly related in the future, he merely has other projects to tackle next.
Why are people getting worked up about a non-story? Nothing has changed. Whedon will do more Serenity stuff if he gets the chance, but don’t hold your breath because people won’t be lining up to give him that chance. This is a non-story storm in a tea-cup generated by people who can’t actually process what they read before posting it.
As for the morons who suggest that this is conclusive proof there is no reason to buy the DVD… Where do I start? You buy DVDs because you like the movie and want to watch it. Not to create the possibility of a sequel!
Arggh. Stupid people make my brain hurt.

I loved both Firefly and Serenity, but to be honest; let it go out on the existing high. I’d rather have one series and one film of sheer brilliance, than one series and one film of sheer brilliance followed by years of drudgery and disappointment, as so many series that have overstayed their welcome tend towards. The film was excellent and had a superb sense of closure at the end; there is no need for further plot. It all wrapped up very nicely, a job well done. There are so few series which actually reach a satisfying conclusion (the others being Babylon 5, and, er… actually just Babylon 5) and it is so rewarding to have something sci-fi with a sense of completion!
