Signal To Noise Movie Adaptation by Dave McKean
UK film magazine Empire has an interview online with Dave McKean about a new movie he is working on. Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman have collaborated on numerous graphic novels and comics. More recently they both worked on Mirrormask, a low budget dark fantasy movie. Now apparently McKean is turning his attention to a movie version of Signal To Noise, his highly regarded graphic novel which he created again in collaboration with Neil Gaiman.
The story of Signal To Noise is of a film director who, on learning he is dying, imagines his final film in his head, realising that it will now never be made. Signal To Noise is definitely a more adult story than Mirrormask. It was originally serialized in The Face magazine before being published as a graphic novel. There was also a BBC radio adaptation of the story.
I’m really curious to see what Mirrormask will end up looking like. Not least because I’m a huge fan of Neil Gaiman’s writing and also of Dave McKean’s unique art style. Their collaborations have generally been impressive.
Signal To Noise is less of an unknown to me as I own the graphic novel and have always liked it. I would like to see a movie version of it though, but I’m not sure how well it will do. In some ways its a very smallscale story. Still perhaps if done on a small budget in the way Mirrormask has been done it can be a success on the arthouse circuit. Signal To Noise is scheduled to start shooting in 2006.
