Smackdown 06-24-04
Smackdown continues its run of very bland shows. Which is admittedly a step up on its preceeding run of bad shows. So I guess I should be thankful for small mercies.
On paper there were some decent enough matchups. John Cena vs. The Undertaker was the main event but despite featuring two of the most popular wrestlers on the show, it struggled to hold my attention.
The 10 man over-the-top-rope cruiserweight battle royal had the same problem. There were some good wrestlers in the ring, but when the end result simply lined us up for yet another Chavo vs. Rey Mysterio match, I couldn’t muster much enthusiasm.
And there I think is the heart of my disinterest with Smackdown recently. There’s no emotional connection with any of the wrestlers. Storylines start, then stop, then veer off into entirely different storylines with no form of resolution whatsoever.
The brand has had some tough breaks recently, losing some of its top stars, but they need to re-focus themselves. There’s enough talent on the show to make it a success if they’ll only take the time to craft stories that the audience cares about. I know they can do it. They’ve managed exactly that on RAW with several different stories.
