Some Days It Doesn’t Pay To Get Out Of Bed
I travel almost 100 miles each day I go to and from work. I’ve never had an accident. Today I’m off work and I drove the 5 minutes to the local Wal-Mart. I had an accident.
It was such a minor thing its ridiculous. I was pulling into a parking space, I miss-judged it and pulled back to adjust my position. At which point the truck in the space next to where I was going, pulled out, turned and then drove forward, taking my bumper with it.
A minor accident, but a major aggravation. Straight away the man refused to admit he was at fault. Quite how I could possibly have driven into him and torn my own bumper off god knows. Then he wouldn’t leave his car with me to call the police (apparently he couldn’t lock the trunk, and there was “valuable” stuff in it). Then he wouldn’t give me his address or insurance details since it “wasn’t his fault”.
As you can imagine my temper was somewhat frayed by this point.
Eventually a Deputy Sheriff arrived (I don’t suppose I was their top priority today) and wasn’t able to do much since it was private property. He did however fill out an exchange of information form for us.
At which point Mr. Helpful as I shall call him, announced that he “did have insurance” but didn’t have the policy number with him. Not only that but according to Mr. Helpful, Virginia didn’t send out proof of insurance cards. Call me highly suspicious at this point.
The Deputy Sherrif wasn’t buying it either, pointing out that he had been handed such cards by Virginia residents before. He then told Mr. Helpful that he had 24 hours to provide a policy number or he was going to be cited for driving without insurance. Which would be good, but I’d rather he has insurance!
Unfortunately, due to driving a POS car, I don’t have collision insurance so I’m reliant on his insurance to pay up or (as the Deputy Sheriff helpfully pointed) take civil action.
Things are looking promising. So far, Progressive, the company that Mr. Helpful supposedly has insurance with has responded very promptly to my claim. I have a claim number. I’ve had a call from the local office, and they’re trying to get an adjuster out to look at the car this afternoon.
I can’t fault them for their response. I’m assuming that it means Mr. Helpful does have insurance. Now all I have to do is persuade them that it was his fault, and that I need a rental car while mine gets fixed. I really don’t think I should be driving it without an indicator light.
All in all though. I really wish today was over.
